Now known as MARI DONALD DESIGN
COMRIE, PERTHSHIRE
Gallery / studio open most days all year for visitors
Watercolour, Gouache and Oil paintings, Photographs and Cards from Roddy and Mari Donald
Scottish landscapes - principally Perthshire and the West Coast and islands from Tiree to Orkney
After some twenty-five years concentrating mainly on textiles we have turned our attention to the other, and up until 2004 when we ceased knitwear production, secondary side
of our output and are now working exclusively in the visual arts, Roddy with photography and Mari in painting. Both of us are self taught but with over 40 and 30
years experience and practise respectively have over the years developed our own distinctive approach to what we see and how we portray it.
Roddy started with bird photography back in the early 1960's with conventional film cameras and over the years has moved on to take pictures of anything he comes across but mainly nature
in its many forms - wildlife, plants, landscapes and seascapes. Having switched to digital cameras in recent years he finds the time saved in the darkroom
and the ability to check instantly that the intended result has been achieved makes life so much easier and gives much more time to take pictures. Despite the opportunities
provided by working digitally to '' enhance or improve '' he prefers to leave things as they are working on the belief that if something is
sufficiently interesting to be worth photographing as you see it then it shouldn't need any altering, except in exceptional circumstances, just simply because you can so easily today.
Mari is the painter beginning in the mid 1970's, her style best described as minimalistic/abstract, working mainly in watercolour but also using oil, gouache and charcoal with
her subjects mainly land or seascapes, flowers and buildings or architectural features. Living in Perthshire at the heart of Scotland much of the inspiration
for both of us comes from the hills virtually on our doorstep and the views from our windows, which thanks to the variable Scottish weather are constantly changing from day to day and even
minute
to minute, and this is reflected in the the number of paintings of Perthshire and around although we are slowly expanding our horizons to cover other areas
of Scotland especially the West and North coast from Ardnamuchan to Orkney and many of the islands between. Over the years our work has found homes as far as Seattle, New York,
Mexico, Peking and Auckland in addition to many in the U K and Europe.
Original paintings start about £50.00 mounted ready for framing and photographs at around £23.00 ( all mounts, usually either 30 x 40 or 40 x 50
cm) will fit standard frames available from Ikea, Habitat or any of the high street Art stores). Since we have found many people look for a frame to fit in with those they already have we
find it easier to sell paintings and photographs just mounted and leave the purchase of frame to you although we do have a limited number of frames
available should you prefer one.
We also have a large number of both photographic and painted images available printed as blank cards at £2.00 each or 3 cards for £5.00 (excluding postage)
We are happy to consider commissions for either paintings or photographs, prices depend on the work involved but paintings normally start at
around £80 unframed.
Painted fabric wall hangings can now be ordered- price varies according to size and subject but as a rough guide 2 meters by 1 meter
flower hanging approximately £250 excluding fabric cost.
We regret that after much consideration we are no longer accepting either credit or debit cards for payment, only cash or sterling cheques please,
since with the seasonal pattern of our sales there are only a few months each year when the the number and value of card sales received justify the cost
of the service.
A small number of examples of our work follow now and as it may take a few minutes depending on your system and connection to download hopefully you will find the wait worthwhile.
Due to variations in
display settings the colours may vary slightly from the original work. Painting sizes shown exclude mounts or frames while photographs can be printed
in any size up to A3 (29x 42 cm) or panoramic format up to 20 x 70 cm at the current time again excluding mounts. Please note that the
inclusion of a painting below does not necessarily mean that it is still available for purchase.
In the event of goods being faulty or damaged then
provided they are returned unused within a reasonable time we shall replace or refund as you prefer (in the case of special or one off items etc we
reserve the right to charge for any additional work, time or materials involved).
